What inspired you to become a Professional Organizer?
After much reflection about becoming a Professional Organizer numerous situations came to mind where employers requested me to use my organizing skills. Work done stretches from Natural food kitchen storage, Hallmark product storage, craft supplies for summer day camp, art supplies in elementary and highschool classrooms, pharmacy storage room, and technology storage area.
Much of my training has been from personal experience as well as extensive research.
My previous work experiences gave me the opportunity to utilize my organizing talents. For example: When I taught elementary art I had over 600 students. All of the supplies were organized and labeled in the room, I kept track of each student's artwork, maintained records, filed and organized visual aides for quick retrieval, as well as planned age appropriate lessons that built sequentially on previously learned skills and information.
Where did I get the name "White Tornado"?
Coming up with the name "White Tornado" for my business was very easy. The name is very symbolic to me, and my mom played a pretty important part too!
First let me touch upon the symbolic aspect.
What is a white tornado??? In nature it is a tornado viewed with the sun shining on it. What a great image!
To me, the tornado represents the chaos and clutter in life. I like to think that I'm the light of hope that shines on the situation.
In nature, tornado's create an absolute mess! Debris is scattered all over the ground.
Before I begin work with my clients I often tell them to be prepared to have the area we are going to work on look as if a tornado hit. "It will get worse before it gets better."
Many of my clients say that I work quickly - I'm in and out and whip things into shape...white tornado style.
As I said, I've been organizing for a long time.
There were times I'd organize an area in my parent's house. My mom would check up on what I was doing and would say, "Looks like a white tornado hit here!"
How do I help you?
I have been called to serve a variety of roles. First and foremost I'm available to help you achieve your goals.
This is the area you work and live in, therefore, I work with you to put systems in place that fit your needs and style.
Cheerleader: I am there to encourage you to "dig in" and get it done. I give you the pat on the back or thumbs up that you deserve and need.
Teacher: Having been a teacher I feel that it is my job to instruct "how to" organize.
I want to be able to leave a client's house and know that they are empowered to continue on their own if they choose.
Motivator: Some people just need me present to motivate them. I often grab hold of the "just do it!!!" motto and encourage my clients to do the same.
By calling and setting an appointment the client has taken the most important step to organizing. Once accountable to me, it is easier to follow through and dig in and deal with the clutter.
Listener: Some of you need me to take the time to listen and share in the memories that some items hold.
You may need someone to come alongside you as you go through the sometimes arduous task of getting organized.
How does the organizing process begin?
First, you need to call. If you are reading this and you know the clutter in your house is making you miserable then call or email! It's the most important step. Once you call, we spend time talking and I begin learning how I can help. We set up a time where I can see your home and meet with you. I always ask that you not tidy or clean the area. It is important that I see just what the target area looks like. We spend approximately 2 hours viewing the area in detail and discussing how you would like the area to look and function. I take BEFORE pictures to study at home and begin creating a plan of attack.
The following steps include sorting through every item in the area, making decisions, purging, designating places for everything, and setting up personalized systems to assist you in maintaining a clutter free home.
